Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are major pollutants, as they are usually highly toxic, and often carcinogenic. They are usually released into the air, but also into the wastewater. There are numerous chemicals grouped under the VOC heading, such as benzene, formaldehyde, toluene, and many, many others. We picked formaldehyde as a typical example of VOC (just like the OSHA did in their safety standards), and assigned the relative toxicity of the formaldehyde to the whole group .
